Custom Work Platforms for Vertical Engine Assembly & Maintenance
Introduction
Custom Work Platforms give technicians safe, ergonomic access to critical work zones around large engines in a vertical orientation.
Project Challenge
Our dealer, Warner Specialty Products brought us this unique and challenging project for Pratt & Whitney. Pratt Whitney, the largest manufacturer of aircraft engines was increasing their jet engine production for their F135. They were setting up their first universal stand-up build platforms in their West Palm Beach Depot. Pratt Whitney wanted a safe and efficient means to access the vertical engine during the build process. They required a large platform to support their assembly teams with all the tools, part carts, and work benches without having to leave the platform.
Our Solution
To support safe and efficient access to engines during vertical assembly, the team at Autoquip engineered a customized work platform lift system. At the core of the solution are two Tork Scissor Lift units paired to form a stable, elevated workspace with a circular center opening. This unique design allows technicians to access the engines from all sides while standing securely on the platform.
To enhance accessibility and safety, the platforms feature articulating access stairs and include aluminum filler rings that close the gaps between the lift and the engine. This allows workers to get closer to critical service and assembly areas without compromising stability.
The complete system also includes three battery-powered cart lifts, enabling teams to load engine components directly onto the work platforms. Designed for flexibility, the entire lift system is portable and easily repositioned between build stations, supporting dynamic production environments.
The system is designed with many special features for operational safety with visibility and audible alerts:
- Skirting around the scissor leg assemblies.
- Audible and visual alarms on each corner of the platform.
- Intrusion scanners under the platform to safeguard when in the raised position.
- Cameras on each corner of the platform with a display on the platform allowing full surround visibility.
- Sensors for platform operations and for any failures in the system.

The Results
Through our partnership with Warner Specialty Products and Pratt Whitney, we were able to successfully deliver a solution that supports streamlined workflows by positioning team members at optimal working heights, reducing strain and minimizing the need for ladders or manual repositioning. With a focus on precision fit, durability, and adaptability, these access platforms are an essential tool for operations involving vertically mounted engine configurations.
