Custom Work Platform Lift Enables Precision Scrap Removal in Aerospace Manufacturing
Introduction
Enhancing Precision, Safety, and Productivity in Aerospace Component Processing.
Project Challenge
An aerospace manufacturer required a safe, precise, and ergonomic solution to support workers during the removal of scrap material from high-value aircraft components. The process demanded:
- Accurate vertical positioning to align operators with complex part geometries
- Horizontal adaptability to conform to varying part profiles
- Maximum protection of high-value components during operation
- Safe access for multiple operators working simultaneously
Given the critical nature and cost of the components, even minor contact or positioning errors could result in significant financial loss.
Our Solution
Autoquip engineered a custom double-long Tork scissor lift work platform designed to integrate seamlessly with the customer’s machine system. The platform allows operators to position themselves ergonomically while maintaining precise alignment with the aerospace component throughout the process.
Key capabilities include synchronized vertical and horizontal positioning, advanced safety systems, and operator-friendly controls.
Key Features & Capabilities
Precision Positioning
- Vertical travel powered by dual hydraulic cylinders driven by two 5HP electrohydraulic power units
- Two vertical transducers provide accurate position feedback
- Pre-programmed vertical and horizontal positions via onboard HMI for repeatable operation
- Linear screw-driven extension shuttle drawers ensure precise horizontal positioning to match part contours
Adaptive Platform Extensions
- Side shuttle extension drawers conform to the unique profile of aerospace components
- Each extension supports up to 500 lbs, enabling close access without compromising stability
High-Capacity Performance
- Main platform rated for 1,000 lbs, supporting multiple operators and tools
- Designed for smooth, controlled lifting to protect both personnel and product
Safety by Design
Protecting both personnel and high-value aerospace parts was a central design priority.
- Pressure-sensitive edges along platform extensions and handrails automatically stop motion upon contact
- Deadman switch system (customer-provided) ensures two-person operational safety control
- Emergency stop (E-Stop) systems at both platform and ground levels
- Manual lowering valves for controlled descent in emergency situations
- Interlocked self-closing gate prevents operation unless secured
- Full perimeter handrails for fall protection
- Anti-skid surfaces on platform and extensions for secure footing
- Protective enclosures and guarding around scissor mechanisms to prevent pinch hazards
Smart Controls & Integration
- Onboard HMI interface provides real-time position feedback and system status
- Pre-programmed positioning improves repeatability and reduces setup time
- Centralized controller communicates through quick-disconnect couplers and cables for efficient integration and maintenance
